Prep Sports Report: Scott sweeps top awards in 10th Region volleyball before first tournament match

Milyn Minor, the leading hitter on Scott’s volleyball team, was named 10th Region Player of the Year one day before the Eagles face Bourbon County in the first round of the region tournament at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bracken County.

This is the second year that Minor has been recognized as the region’s top player by members of the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association. The 5-foot-10 outside hitter has more than 350 kills this season.

Scott will enter Tuesday’s match with a 26-11 record under Andrea Sullivan, who was named 10th Region Coach of the Year. The Eagles have played in 10 of the last 12 region finals and won five titles under Sullivan.

Brossart defeated Bracken County, 3-0, in a 10th Region tournament match Monday. The 25-11 Mustangs will play Montgomery County in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The state coaches association selected Notre Dame senior libero Julia Grace as 9th Player of the Year and Tasha Tanner-Lovins as 9th Region Coach of the Year. Both of their teams will play in region tournament semifinal matches on Tuesday.

Grace, a Xavier University recruit, has team-high totals of 557 digs and 45 service aces for Notre Dame, the state’a top-ranked team. Lovins has guided the Ryle team to a 24-8 record that includes a win over Louisville Assumption, ranked No. 2 in the state.

qualifying time for Class 2A boys state meet

Covington Catholic senior Will Sheets ran the fastest qualifying time for the Class 2A boys state championship meet when he won the Region 4 race last Saturday in 15:05.73. He also posted the top time in the entire state (14:44.47) during the regular season.

Thomas Nelson senior Riku Sugie, last year’s Class 2A state champion, ranks second behind Sheets. He won the Region 2 meet in 15:26.26 last Saturday. The third-best state qualifying time was 15:30.20 by CovCath junior Joe Mayer in Region 4.

Beechwood junior Lily Parke’s winning time of 19:18.08 in the Class 1A, Region 4 girls race was less than a second behind the top state qualifying time of 19:17.75 by Walden sophomore Elizabeth Mathews in Region 3. She’s an individual state qualifier since Walden does not have a full team.

The top local qualifier in the Class 1A boys state meet is Villa Madonna senior Mark Antrobus, who is eighth at 16:50.89. In Class 3A boys and girls, Cooper junior Paul Van Laningham is 16th (15:42.99) and Ryle senior Allison Kopser is 18th (18:54.60) among qualifiers for those races.

Starting times for the cross country state championship meets on Saturday at Kentucky Horse Park are 10 a.m. for Class 3A girls, 10:45 a.m. for Class 3A boys, 12:30 p.m. for Class 2A girls, 1:15 p.m. for Class 2A boys, 3 p.m. for Class 1A girls and 3:45 p.m. for Class 1A boys.

Cooper senior golfer earns girls first-team
all-state honors for third consecutive season

Cooper senior golfer Reagan Ramage earned first-team all-state honors for the third consecutive year by placing third in the girls season point standings compiled by the Kentucky Golf Coaches Association.

Ramage tied for fourth place in her final girls state tournament this fall. She placed fourth as a junior and fifth as a sophomore to earn first-team all-state honors the previous two seasons. The Western Kentucky University recruit was medalist in the Region 7 tournament the last five years.

Two Ryle golfers who earned second-team all-state honors this year were Anika Okuda in girls and Paxton McKelvey in boys.
