Mark Hansel named NKyTribune managing editor, brings long history, extensive reporting experience

Veteran reporter Mark Hansel, who has covered Northern Kentucky for over a decade, has been named managing editor of the nkytribune.com, editor Judy Clabes announced today.

Hansel fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a journalist after a 20-year career in retail, mostly in Northern Kentucky. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 2005 and started his journalism career with internships for the Community Press and the Cincinnati Post. He took a job with The Post while still in college, covering Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

“Northern Kentucky is filled with a diverse group of community leaders, business owners and citizens that are engaged in their communities,” Hansel says. “I welcome the opportunity to help the Northern Kentucky Tribune became the daily news source in the region.”

Hansel joined the NKyTribune in January to help plan and advance its launch on January 12.

“We are so pleased to have Mark on the Trib team,” said editor Clabes. “He shares our vision and values, loves the area and the public service aspect of good journalism as much as we do, and is a very fine reporter and editor.

“We look forward to his long and rewarding involvement and having his terrific talent, energy and professionalism influencing our newspaper.”

In 2006, Mark moved to Las Vegas and for four years, covered city government, retail and real estate for the Las Vegas Sun. In 2009, while Mark was on staff, The Las Vegas Sun was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service Journalism.

Mark returned to Cincinnati in late 2009 and became the Boone County Beat Reporter for the Kentucky Enquirer, a position he would hold for five years. During that time, Mark became a fixture in the community and covered a wide range of issues throughout Northern Kentucky.

After a brief stint in Columbus, Indiana, Mark returned to Greater Cincinnati and assisted with the launch of the Northern Kentucky Tribune in January.

“As a longtime Greater Cincinnati resident who has covered Northern Kentucky for the Kentucky Post and the Kentucky Enquirer, I have seen firsthand how deeply the people of the region care about the issues that affect their lives. I look forward to sharing their stories and helping explain, not only what takes place in Northern Kentucky, but why it happens.”

Mark has received recognition from journalism organizations in Ohio, Kentucky and Nevada covering business, sports, enterprise and breaking news.

Mark now lives in Mt. Washington with Cecilia, his wife of 34 years, but covering news in Northern Kentucky remains his passion.
