Northern Kentucky University’s College of Education and Human Services (COEHS), in collaboration with the Division of Student Affairs and the Office of Inclusive Excellence, will host food justice activist LaDonna Redmond as part of the Fall 2017 Think Tank series from November 6 -7, 2017.
This think tank will explore how to move communities from food insecurity toward food justice.
Redmond will present “A Vision for the Future: Sustainable, Organic, Urban, and Local (Soul) Food System.” Her keynote address focuses on her 15 years as a food justice activist and will be followed by sessions on how lack of access to nutritious food impacts the community.

On November 7, the morning will be focused on the state of hunger and poverty with break-out sessions on poverty and food injustice, hunger in schools, and the impact of hunger in families and communities. The lunch plenary will focus on policy and politics related to food insecurity and its consequences. And, the afternoon sessions will focus on solution-focused responses.
“The College of Education and Human Services is committed to addressing population health issues in our region that impact schools and families, and food insecurity is a major one,” said Cynthia Reed, Dean of the College of Education and Human Services.
“LaDonna has been fighting for food justice through her work at the Chicago Food Systems Collaborative, a community partnership focused on food and public health access in African American communities. She brings to light the overall educational and wellness issues caused by food injustice. We are happy to have her join us for this important dialogue and multi-pronged solution development event.”
COEHS has been addressing food insecurity among university students through Fuel NKU— an on-campus food pantry. It provides food and essentials to students in a compassionate, confidential and safe environment.
Think tank events are free and open to the public, but registration is required.
Redmond’s keynote address will take place at the Student Union Ballroom on November 6 at 6:30 p.m. The Think Tank sessions take place the next day on November 7 from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
