Ride Cincinnati annual cycling event targeting cancer research, care, expands June 10 event

One in three women and one in two men in Greater Cincinnati will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Such high prevalence means that nearly everyone in the region will be affected by this disease, a stark reminder of the urgent need for life-saving cancer research and top-notch cancer care.

Ride Cincinnati, the annual cycling event supporting the UC Health Barrett Cancer Center, is calling on both cyclists and non-cyclists to unite and help develop the region into a leader in world-class cancer research, education and care through a new, ambitious fundraising approach and updated cycling event.

With its sights set on becoming the premier grassroots fundraising event in Cincinnati, Ride Cincinnati plans to raise more than $500,000 for cancer research this year, while laying the foundation for millions more in the years ahead.

The event’s longtime partner and sponsor, Western & Southern, is stepping up its commitment to the Ride, and the two organizations are joining forces in the community-wide effort to bring the coveted National Cancer Institute designation to Cincinnati.

“The 2018 Ride Cincinnati event will unite colleagues, friends and family in support of one common goal: to defeat cancer,” said John F. Barrett, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Western & Southern Financial Group. “Time and again, participants have demonstrated their commitment to the cause of raising money for life-saving cancer research, and this new chapter will empower even more riders to make even more significant contributions to this cause.”

“Cincinnati needs and deserves an NCI-designated cancer center for the benefit of people living in our community,” said Dr. William Barrett, director of the Barrett Cancer Center. “This is a community-wide effort, and we expect every patient, provider and health system in the region to benefit. No one wants this diagnosis, but if you have to face this adversary, we want Cincinnati to be the very best place in the world to be.”

Over the past 11 years, Ride Cincinnati has raised $2.8 million for cancer research and funded 34 research grants impacting individuals living right here in Cincinnati.

In addition to the new grassroots fundraising efforts, Ride Cincinnati will be making enhancements to the overall rider experience, including a special kickoff celebration the evening before and additional rider engagement opportunities leading up to the June 10 event.

Registration is open and additional event details are available at www.ridecincinnati.org.
