Beechwood posted an impressive victory in its first-ever appearance in a state basketball tournament and the youngest player in the Tigers’ starting lineup led the way.

Beechwood crushed Lynn Camp, 72-39, in the opening game of the Kentucky All “A” Classic boys’ state basketball tournament on Thursday morning with freshman guard Scotty Draud scoring a game-high 27 points for the 9th Region small school champions.
Beechwood (13-9) advances to the state tournament quarterfinals and plays Knott County Central (14-4) at 5 p.m. Friday at McBrayer Arena in Richmond.
Lynn Camp was averaging 75 points per game before the lopsided loss to Beechwood. The Wildcats shot 28.9 percent (11 of 38) from the field and made only four field goals in the second half. They were limited to three offensive rebounds and scored no second-chance points during the game.
The Tigers shot 62.8 percent (27 of 43) and won the battle on the boards by a 34-16 margin. Junior center Duncan Baugh snagged 11 rebounds and scored 11 points to post a double-double. Senior guard Ben Toebbe netted 16 points
Draud made three 3-point shots and scored 11 points in the first quarter when Beechwood took a 17-6 lead. The Tigers scored the first seven points in the second quarter and extended the margin to 24-6 on a tip-in basket by junior guard C.J. Brannen.
The first half ended with Beechwood ahead, 33-21, and the Tigers continued to pull away in the final two quarters to come away with the 33-point victory. Lynn Camp’s other two losses this season were by 1 point and 10 points.
