Ky foursome, including three NKyians, places 2nd in Liberty Mutual Insurance Invitational National Finals

A foursome from Kentucky put together four outstanding rounds of golf last week to place second in the Liberty Mutual Insurance Invitational National Finals at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort in Kiawah Island, S. C.

Logan Edelen of Lexington, Daniel Greene of Edgewood, Dave Hellmann of Lakeside Park, and Greg Way of Hebron qualified to compete against 240 amateur golfers by winning the Liberty Mutual Invitational held at Spring Valley Golf Club in Lexington last August.

Playing two rounds on The Ocean Course and a round on both Osprey Point and Turtle Point Golf Courses at Kiawah Island was a grueling test of their skills and determination. But scores of 63, 65, 63, and 62 for a total of 253 were enough to secure a second-place finish in the event.

Hall of Fame golfer Curtis Strange
Nancy Lopez, the LPGA star and World Golf Hall of Famer, presented the golfers from Kentucky with the runner-up trophy.

The Liberty Mutual Insurance Invitational National Finals was the culmination of a series of more than 75 charity golf tournaments around the country in 2017. It was hosted by Liberty Mutual as well as local and national charitable organizations that raised more than $9 million for charity.

“These foursomes were among more than 12,000 amateur golfers across the country who generously supported national and local charities by playing in the Liberty Mutual Insurance Invitational,” said Nicole Guidara, senior vice president & manager, Enterprise Brand & Communications, Liberty Mutual Insurance. “We sincerely appreciate these players’ efforts to celebrate their invaluable contributions to their communities.”

The invitational program is supported nationally by Cobra-PUMA Golf, Bridgestone Golf, Under Armour Eyewear, Polaroid, Shark Ninja, Voice Caddie, Blank Label, and The Experience – St. Andrews.

Two-time U.S. Open Champion and World Golf Hall of Famer Curtis Strange, honorary chairman of the Liberty Mutual Invitational, was on-site to interact with players during the four-day tournament.

“I am proud and honored to be a part of the Liberty Mutual Insurance Invitational,” Strange said. “In just seven years, this annual tournament for amateur golfers has raised over $55 million for so many worthwhile charities and the people that they serve.”

The Liberty Mutual Insurance Invitational tournaments are single-day events featuring an 18-hole Scramble format open to men and women amateur golfers of all skill levels in the local community. Each tournament is held at a prestigious golf course in that community and concludes with a dinner and awards ceremony.

Leaders from the community, business and charitable organizations run and promote the local tournaments with support from local Liberty Mutual employees. Winning foursomes from each local tournament are invited to play in the four-day Liberty Mutual Invitational National Finals the following spring.
