The Bishop Brossart baseball team won its first 37th District championship since 2012 by edging Campbell County, 5-4, in the title game on Thursday at Scott High School.

The Mustangs took a 5-3 lead in the fifth inning on Nathan Bezold’s two-run double. The Camels scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run on second base when Brossart got the final out.
Both teams advance to next week’s 10th Region tournament at Campbell County. The draw to determine first-round opponents will be on Friday.
The draw for the 9th Region baseball tournament will be held on Saturday. The eight-team field includes district champions Cooper, St. Henry, Covington Catholic and Highlands. They will play first-round games at UC Health Stadium in Florence against district runner-up teams Ryle, Dixie Heights, Beechwood and Newport Central Catholic.
Highlands defeated NewCath, 13-1, in the 36th District final on Thursday and advances to the regional tournament with a 23-13 record. The Bluebirds were region champs the last three years.
The eight-team field for the 9th Region fast-pitch softball tournament at Newport Veterans Field is also set. The district winners are Ryle, St. Henry, Notre Dame and Highlands. Their first-round opponents will be Boone County, Dixie Heights, Holy Cross and Dayton. The draw to determine pairings is also scheduled for Saturday.
Dayton will be making its debut in the 9th Region fast-pitch softball playoffs with a 10-8 record that includes a 1-4 mark against teams in the tournament bracket. Cooper has a 21-5 record that includes one-run losses to Cooper and Dixie Heights during the regular season.
Campbell County and Scott will compete in the 10th Region softball tournament at Pendleton County. Simon Kenton and Walton-Verona qualified for the 8th Region baseball and softball tournaments. The host teams are Oldham County for baseball and Henry County for softball.
