A mother and daughter will be recognized for their achievements in high school sports at the 36th annual Northern Kentucky Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame banquet on Thursday, Nov. 15.
Nancy Jones Barre will receive the Tom Potter Distinguished Service Award from the athletic directors and her daughter, Angela Barre Falhaber, will be among the 12 new inductees into the hall of fame.
Nancy was a volleyball player and state champion swimmer for Highlands. She graduated in 1970 and went on to get a degree in education. She returned to Highlands as a physical education teacher and coached volleyball, basketball and swimming during her career.
Her daughter, Angela, also went to Highlands and earned 20 varsity letters in five different sports before graduating in 1998. She won regional titles in swimming and played on two 9th Region runner-up teams in girls basketball.
Dan Hamberg, a 1981 Highlands graduate, will also receive the Tom Potter Distinguished Service Award from the athletic directors. He began keeping statistics for the Highlands boys basketball team when he was in the eighth grade. He was also the statistician for the girls basketball team for several seasons and he’s currently keeping stats for the Bluebirds football team.
The awards ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 15 at Receptions on Donaldson Road in Erlanger. There will be a social hour and slide show from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 and will be available until Oct. 25 by contacting the athletic director at the high school of any award-winner or hall of fame inductee.
Here are the other seven men and four women who will be inducted into the Northern Kentucky Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame this year:
MIKE BROCK (Simon Kenton, 2003) – Scored 1,744 points and pulled down 1,029 rebounds during his high school career. Led his team to the 9th Region final as a senior.
EDDIE EVISTON (Newport Central Catholic, 1997) – Passed for more than 1,400 yards as a senior quarterback in football and earned varsity letters in two other sports. Returned to NewCath as head football coach and won two Class AA state championships.
COREY FARRIS (Boone County, 2008) – Batted .432 with 34 home runs and 149 RBI during his baseball career. Rushed for 2,824 yards in his final season of football to finish with a career total of 6,227 yards.
JOHN GIBSON (Simon Kenton, 1993) – Named to local all-star teams as a tight end in football and center in basketball during his senior year. Led the state in rebounding with a 14.7 average during his final season of basketball.
JACK HURTT (Bellevue, 1978) – Earned nine varsity letters in football, baseball and basketball. Played on the 1977 Class A state championship team and returned a missed field goal for a touchdown in the title game.
KIRSTEN ALLEN MICHELTREE (Ryle, 2008) – Posted 142 wins in six seasons as pitcher and named Miss Kentucky Softball after her senior season. Holds several fast-pitch softball state records, including most no-hitters (41) and most perfect games (15).
LISA LUTHY NESSLER (Bellevue, 1978) – Earned nine varsity letters in volleyball, basketball and track. Named all-state in volleyball and won 60-yard hurdles at Class A state meet.
DON SHIELDS (Villa Madonna, 1989-2014) – Ranks fourth in career wins among Northern Kentucky girls basketball coaches with 401-296 record in 25 seasons. Guided his teams to 16 consecutive winning seasons.
JOE STAMM (Newport, 1983) – Compiled 32-2 record as baseball pitcher and had 15 or more strike outs in eight games. Named to coaches all-region baseball team three times.
JASMINE VOGELPOHL TILLER (Brossart, 2004) – Won more than 100 games in five seasons as softball pitcher and finished with 1.91 career earned run average. Led the 2002 team to first fast-pitch state tournament appearance.
EMILY CULBERTSON TRACY (Dixie Heights, 2003) – Finished second in girls state golf tournament twice. Shot 75 or under in 46 18-hole rounds and had 73 season average as a senior.
