Julia Pile for Boone County School Board
If you live in Boone County and are in the District 4 area, please consider voting for Julia Pile for the Boone County School Board.
“I have personally witnessed Julia spend endless hours advocating for the students of Boone County as well as all of NKY. During this time, she has persevered as a leader in the community working hard to link schools, families and community. Her involvement has also included being a parent, working in education, volunteering in the schools and community and being a great leader. Julia will be a great addition to the Boone County School Board with her past and current experiences and her passion for community engagement.”

My name is Paula McPeake and I’m the coordinator for MENT2BE at Stephens Elementary. I’m also proud to call myself a friend and supporter of Julie Pile. I can’t believe it’s been 7 years since I first met Julie. It was in my early days of volunteering at Stephens Elementary. She walked into the Holiday Shop with her youngest in tow and humbly and quietly turned chaos into a well-oiled machine. I began to really notice her after that; present at every event and always the last to leave. It wasn’t long before she became my go-to person. She patiently answered my questions and directed me to just the right source. She found ways for me to learn and engage in the community as well as the schools because that’s what she does; brings people together. She doesn’t just know people; she builds relationships with them. You can’t be around Julie for long without getting pulled into her ever-growing circle of what I call “good people.” She has worked diligently for our kids in the areas of education and family engagement. That is where her heart is and we’ve all reaped the benefits of her passion in some way. I can’t think of a candidate better equipped or prepared to serve on the School Board.

Adam Thomas for Marcia Thomas, Judge
Hardworking doesn’t even begin to define my mother. She is beyond that, she defines the word itself. On top of raising myself and my 3 siblings and working a full time job to help support us, she found time to realize her dream and earn her law degree. My mom never stops, and nothing is “enough”. My mom has been a public servant for over 20 years, working as an Assistant Boone County Attorney. During this time, she has found the time to earn two Masters Degrees and continue to be a great mother and an even better grandmother to 11 grandchildren! If we, as voters are looking to improve our justice system through hard work, dedication and honesty, then we have to start with my mother Marcia Thomas. I ask you to join me on November 6th, and vote THOMAS for District Court Judge.

Denise Durbin supports Derek Durbin for Circuit Judge
It’s a weird feeling to sit across from a convicted rapist or an armed robber. After prosecuting hundreds of cases, it really never became any less uncomfortable. Circuit Court is where felonies crimes are handled. It’s where I exclusively practiced prior to coming to Children’s Law Center. I can tell you from my own legal experience, Circuit Court is not a place for the inexperienced. Derek Durbin is the opposite of inexperienced — his entire legal career has included handling hundreds of criminal cases, if not thousands, many of them in Circuit Court.
It was quickly evident to my fellow assistant prosecutors when lawyers were in the courtroom who lacked experience in felony criminal cases. I am sure civil attorneys would similarly smell my inexperience coming if I found myself representing someone in a personal injury case. Now, please don’t get me wrong – criminal law is not exactly difficult to understand. But the dynamics involved in felony offenses, however, takes years to understand and before becoming proficient. Lacking experience in criminal law makes certain offenses and legal concepts hard to fully grasp. What’s the significance of sandwich bags in a car with the corners missing? Why is stalking a sign of future lethality? How should questions be asked of children crime victims? Why do children more often not tell after they’ve been abused? I can tell you with confidence these things are not taught in law school. An ideal trial judge has this sort of experience. I’ve appeared before 15 or more judges in Kentucky. The best ones are the ones who have the wisdom from practicing the very type of law that comes before Circuit Court. Derek Durbin is that candidate.
I met first met Derek in 2009, after I started as a felony prosecutor. He was in private practice, running his solo firm here in Campbell County. Derek had a good amount of felony cases in Campbell County. He stood out to me because he wasn’t like a lot of the attorneys I dealt with. He listened more than he talked, he brought reason and objectivity to his case analysis, and he was friendly and pleasant. Trust me, these are not the qualities you see in a lot of trial attorneys (insert laughing emoji). Our adversarial relationship was short-lived, because we eventually started dating. Despite what TV shows depict, legal professional ethics forbid a romantic relationship between prosecutor and criminal defense attorney. I never had a case against Derek again because I eventually married him, and we’ve remained happily so married for over six years. . .
. . .We need someone who has experience practicing in Campbell Circuit Court.
I can tell you a lot about crimes that are prosecuted in Circuit Court. But I can tell you even more about the type of person Derek will be on the bench. He will be fair. Derek isn’t persuaded by “who you know.” Instead, he’ll be persuaded by what the law says. Derek will be honest and ethical. He follows the rules, all the while staying allegiant to independent thought. Derek will be compassionate. I’ve watched him console our four-year-old countless times when he’s fallen from running barefoot down the street. One thing Derek is not – he’s no politician. You won’t find Derek “working the room” or having disingenuous conversations just to fill time. We don’t need another politician deciding such important issues in our great County. We don’t need just some other lawyer on our bench – we need someone with the right experience. That candidate is my husband, Derek Durbin.
