Turfway Park selections for New Year’s Day

Turfway Park’s Mike Battaglia provides daily selections and comments for the Tribune during the live racing meets.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 1 (Preview)

Race 1
Battaglia

TRES TROUBADOURS has some early speed and the inside post. If he makes the lead he could beat this bunch. PRAY FOR KITTEN comes off a couple of decent races. COLONIAL COMPOSER drops in class.

Race 2

SKYDERE gets the nod in a very weak field. SCOUTING has been stopping badly but drops to the bottom and is the one to beat. SILKY GOLD is a contender.

Race 3

MANSOOR ran evenly in a much tougher starter allowance field last out. He prefers more distance but looks like a winner with McKee back aboard for Doug Danner. DECISIVE BOSS drops a notch in class and should get a good trip from the inside post. WOLF MAN ROCKET fits in here.

Race 4

RISKY TOWN was a beaten favorite last out but is in easier tonight and looks best at this level. EARLE STATION stopped badly last out after being carried wide turning for home. Look for a better effort in here. BASIC HERO has the speed to be dangerous.

Race 5

BREAK THE DEAL is a five year old who just got his maiden win but he drops to the bottom and can make it two in a row with Ouzts back aboard. MIGUEL ran a decent race in his first start back after a three-month layoff. He could add value to the gimmicks. WIND RHAPSODY is a solid contender.

Race 6

AMBIDEXTROUS ALEX came away with an impressive win when dropped to the bottom last out. He moves back up in class for this one but rates the slight edge in a very well matched race. AT GUARD also comes off a win. He will be rallying from just off the pace and figures to be tough to beat. RUN TO FREEDOM is a definite threat.

Race 7

ETHYL ETHER faded in the stretch after pressing a very fast pace last out. She will like the move back to a mile and has the speed to be on or near the lead throughout. She looks best for Connelly and Ouzts. ACORN STREET has been running for a tag but comes off an even effort at Fair Grounds and looks dangerous in this spot. POP BY stopped badly last out but has posted two good works since that start and has to be considered.

Race 8

WILD ZAMBEZI just missed in her first try over the Turfway Poly and should move forward off that effort. She has the tactical speed to be in contention throughout under Johnny McKee and rates the edge for Jeff Greenhill. IMPROVISER was a sharp winner last out and a repeat of that one maker him the one to beat. MR. BENZ has been off since April but drops to the bottom for his return. Watch the board on this one.
