The Brossart boys track team has placed first in four meets already this season and coach Chris Davis gives senior leadership most of the credit for the Mustangs’ early success.
“We’ve got a lot of good seniors that have gotten faster and stronger through the years,” Davis said. “They’re all good kids and it’s coming together at the right time for them.”

The Brossart team’s next challenge comes Tuesday when they’ll compete in the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference Division II Championships at St. Henry High School.
All of the running events in the conference meet are relays. In each of the field events, a team enters two athletes and their combined distances decide what place they finish.
Depth will be a key factor in deciding the final team standings and Davis expects a close scoring battle between his team, St. Henry, Newport Central Catholic and Beechwood.
“It’s one of the most competitive seasons around here that I can remember,” Davis said. “I can see the top three teams being 10 points apart between them.”
Over the last few weeks, Brossart has come out on top in two tight meets. The Mustangs had winning margins of 13 points in the Donnie Carnes Invitational on April 13 and four points in the Diocese of Covington Championships on April 17.
St. Henry was the team that placed a close second in the diocese meet for local Catholic schools. Davis knows the Crusaders will be looking forward to getting another crack at his team in Tuesday’s conference relays.
“St. Henry could have easily beat us last time if a few things had went their way,” Davis said. “They’ve got another solid team so there’s no easy road for us, that’s for sure.”
Twin brothers Jacob and Jordan Moore are among the seniors on the Brossart team. Jacob is a versatile sprinter and Jordan holds the school record in the 300-meter hurdles. The team’s best distance runners are seniors Joe Curtsinger, Brandon Leicht and Brad Hickman.
In field events, the Mustangs also have several senior veterans. The list includes Jack Reis in the shot put and discus, Allen Jump in the long jump and high jump and J.D. Schumacher in the triple jump and long jump.
“Our guys know what it takes to win as a team,” Davis said. “I really think they get more enjoyment out of seeing the team do well than just doing well by themselves.”
The NKAC Division I Championships for large-school teams was cancelled last Thursday due to rain. A new date for the event has not yet been announced.
