United Way of the Bluegrass has joined forces with NaviGo College and Career Prep Services to present the NaviGo Scholars program to high school students in Central Kentucky.

The program engages local businesses, as well as community and family members, in the future of local high school students by guiding them toward a path of success. In addition, the program works toward providing a trained and educated workforce to meet the future needs of the region.

NaviGo Scholars is entering its second year in the Northern Kentucky Region. For the 2015-16 school year, eight sponsor companies — Toyota, Duke Energy, Mazak, Pomeroy, Citi, Heritage Bank, C-Forward and Toyota Boshoku — combed through applications from students hoping to be part of the NaviGo Scholars program. Ultimately, 150 Scholars were selected.

Sponsors look for students with interests that connect with their respective workforces. Identifying those students before they graduate from high school allows company leaders to work with those who could potentially fill their future job needs. In turn, students get training and experience they may not have received without the NaviGo Scholars program. NaviGo will also provide a college and career coach for each of the participating students.

This approach not only helps serve the region’s workforce needs and assists selected students with preparation of needed skills beyond high school, but also has an impact on workforce development, encourages successful transition to college and/or career, and supports United Way’s Big Bold Goal for the Central Kentucky community.
