Three fumble recoveries by Beechwood’s defense enabled running back Brandon Berger to score the winning touchdown for the Tigers in a Class 1A district game against Newport Central Catholic on Friday, Oct. 2, 1992.

Brandon Berger, left, and Brad Wulfeck were both 1,000-yard rushers on the 1992 Beechwood team.

In the third quarter, Berger broke free on an 87-yard scoring run to give Beechwood a 12-8 lead and that turned out to be the final score.

NewCath finished with 334 yards compared to Beechwood’s 174, but the Thoroughbreds fumbled near the goal line twice and lost the ball again after driving to the 12-yard line.

“We got lucky tonight,” Berger said after the game. “Those were three big (defensive) plays down near our goal line, and if we don’t make them we’re in trouble.”

Berger’s breakaway run came after his team’s third fumble recovery. He ended up rushing for 148 yards in the win. NewCath running backs Brandon Hager and Rob Sandfoss also surpassed 100-yard mark.

Beechwood went on to win its second consecutive Class 1A state title under coach Mike Yeagle and finished with a 13-1 record. Berger and teammate Brad Wulfeck were both 1,000-yard rushers that season.
