Thomas More volleyball clinches 20-win season, moves into tie for first place in Mid-South Conference

Jenna Mummert and Carlee Lambert combined for 28 kills and 11 blocks as Thomas More posted a 25-16, 25-19, 24-26, 25-14 win over the Cumberlands (Ky.) on Saturday in the Connor Convocation Center.

Madison Krumpelman added eight kills and four service aces for Thomas More, which secured its eighth consecutive 20-win season. The Saints (20-6 overall) hit .233 as a team and moved into a tie for first place in the Mid-South Conference standings with an 11-2 record.

Lindsey Wilson is also 11 -2 in the Mid-South Conference. The Blue Raiders (23-5 overall record) are ranked No. 10 nationally in the NAIA poll, while Thomas More is receiving votes.

Mummert finished with 15 kills, eight blocks and four aces, while Lambert added 13 kills and three blocks. Mummert attacked at a .310 clip as Thomas More extended its home winning streak to 30. The Saints haven’t lost at home since Sept. 21, 2016, when Hanover pulled out a five-set victory in the Connor Convocation Center.

Jess Ginn served up three aces and led the defense with 18 digs. Thomas More limited the Cumberlands (13-12 overall, 4-9 Mid-South Conference) to a .136 hitting percentage and owned a 13-3 advantage in aces.

Sawyer Lorentz added six kills and five blocks, while Alli Borders recorded five kills and six blocks. Thomas More setters Maddie Read (20 assists) and Lizzie Schoenfeld (17 assists) directed the offense, which hit .308 in the opening set.

Thomas More — which has won eight consecutive matches — hits the road to meet Cumberland (Tenn.) on Friday night in a Mid-South Conference battle.

LATE TD LIFTS GEORGETOWN OVER THOMAS MORE: Isaiah Cobb scored on a 1-yard plunge with 16.2 seconds remaining in the game to lift Georgetown (Ky.) to a 20-19 win over visiting Thomas More on Saturday at Toyota Stadium.

Cobb’s touchdown run capped a 60-yard drive in the final 1:48 of the game. The Tigers used a pair of 13-yard completions from quarterback Zach Dampier to Jake Johnson and Ellis Dunn to move the ball to the Thomas More 27.

Dampier then hit Johnson with a 10-yard pass, and a pair of running plays advanced the ball to the Thomas More 1, setting the stage for Cobb’s winning score in the first-ever game between the two schools in football.

Georgetown improved to 4-3 overall, 3-1 in the Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division. Thomas More dropped to 3-5 overall, 1-3 Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division.

Thomas More quarterback Justin Post passed for 215 yards and a touchdown, while Monalo Caldwell gained 67 yards on the ground. Da’marco Canty caught four passes for 75 yards, and Johnny McNally added three receptions for 83 yards and a score.

Thomas More plays at Bethel (Tenn.) next Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
