Portz paces Norse men to eighth-place finish in season’s first golf tournament


The Northern Kentucky men’s golf team earned a share of eighth place in its first tournament of the season, the Turning Stone – Tiger Invitational hosted by Missouri.

Following opening day scores of 304 and 286, the Norse wrapped up the tournament final round 307. NKU tied Grand Canyon at 33-over par and finished ahead of West Virginia (10th) and Villanova (12th).

Senior Clayton Portz paced NKU with rounds of 75-68-76-219 to finish three-over par and tied for 14th. At 7-over (76-71-76-223) for the tournament, Jacob Brinker tied for 23rd.

Matt Wetherill (+11, t-37), Jacob Poore (+14, t-46) and Landon Osborne (+20, 69) wrapped up NKU’s countable scorers.

Logan Gamm carded rounds of 78-78-77-233 (+17) participating as an individual and wrapped up the tournament t-60th.

Mizzou won the tournament at 2-under (862) and fellow Horizon League member Cleveland State finished second (+8). CSU’s Joey Krecic won the individual title at 4-under (212).

Northern Kentucky will be back in action at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational Sept. 14-15 in Hungtington, West Virginia.
