As Covington’s bicentennial year comes to a close, COV200, the volunteer group behind the City of Covington’s bicentennial celebration, is still at work making sure their efforts leave a lasting legacy.
“We have accomplished a lot of great things this past year celebrating Covington’s history, and as the celebrations wind down we want to continue the momentum of those efforts into Covington’s future,” said Normand Desmarais, COV200 Chair.

At 5 p.m. on February 25, COV200 is hosting a Legacy Launch Event at the Madison Event Center. Details regarding an education initiative to benefit current and future Covington students will be announced at the event, which will also recognize those who have helped contribute to the year-long celebration.
“The goal of the COV200 Legacy Education Initiative is to close the achievement gap for children in our community and make Covington a city where all children can be successful,” explained Jordan Huizenga, Covington City Commissioner and COV200 Education Committee Chair.
“We are planning a new and innovative collaboration with Covington schools, Covington Partners, Children, Inc. and other community partners to achieve this dream,” said Huizenga.
Also part of the legacy projects, the finished Bicentennial Time Capsule will be on display at the launch event.
COV200 partnered with local maker Steven Sander to create the time capsule constructed out of local, Covington-inspired material. The final bourbon barrel design was chosen by the community after voting on three different options.
“The time capsule is a way for Covington residents to be a part of Covington history and leave their own legacy for future generations,” said Desmarais.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information and to RSVP, visit www.eventbrite.com/e/legacy-launch-event-tickets-20732171483.
