Students from Metcalfe County High School, Williamstown Independent Schools in Grant County, Rockfield Elementary in Warren County and Stinnett Elementary in Leslie County took first place in the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s 2015 Adopt-a-Highway Art Contest.

Madeline Whaley, from Williamstown Independent Schools, captured first place in the 12-14 age category. Three other Williamstown students also were among the top three in their age group.
“The purpose of the contest is to increase public awareness about the damaging effects of litter,” acting Transportation Secretary Mike Hancock said. “We use the vibrant artwork our contest winners produce to educate Kentuckians about our Adopt-a-Highway program and change attitudes and behaviors about littering.”
The winner in each of four age divisions received a $100 gift card, while second, and third-place finishers each received a $50 gift card. First through third-place recipients for all age groups received framed prints of their posters while the originals are framed and displayed for one year at the Transportation Cabinet’s Conference Center in Frankfort.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet urges students and teachers to get an early start on the 2016 art contest. The cabinet will begin accepting entries Sept. 1, 2016. The entries will close on Oct. 15, 2016.
