Notre Dame Academy’s four students from the class of 2016 have been recognized as National Merit Finalists by the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program.
NDA seniors Andrea Davis, Carly Gross, Kelsey Sucher, Lily Thaman have all earned the distinction of National Merit Finalist.
These students were among the 16,000 semifinalists named in the National Merit Scholarship Program’s 61st competition in September recognizing each state’s top students. A total of 1.5 million high school juniors entered the program by taking the 2014 PSAT test.
To become finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program, these young women submitted scholarship applications that included information about their academic records, co-curricular activities, leadership abilities, honors, awards and employment.
“We are very proud of these NDA scholars as it is quite an honor to be recognized as a National Merit Finalist,” said Mr. Jack VonHandorf, Principal of Notre Dame Academy. “This accomplishment is a reflection of the diligence of our students and dedication of our faculty. We congratulate all four of these young women and their families.”
Newport Central Catholic
Newport Central Catholic High School’s Senior Scott Barrett, son of Ralph and Diane Barrett of Highland Heights, KY for being named a National Merit Finalist.

In March, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) will notify these academically talented high school seniors who have an opportunity to receive some 7,400 Merit Scholarship awards, worth $32 million.
More than 1.5 million juniors in nearly 22,000 high schools entered the 2016 National Merit Program by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants.
Principal Jason Huther states, “Scott is an extremely intelligent and witty young man. His work ethic, and ability to think critically and understand complex problems, will take him far in college and beyond. We are proud of Scott’s accomplishment in being named a National Merit Finalist.”
