Covington Education Foundation names Judge Charlie Moore as ’26 Person of Year, gala set

Celebrating a monumental double milestone, the Covington Education Foundation has announced the Honorable Judge Charlie Moore as its 2026 Person of the Year.

This year’s gala carries historic weight, as it coincides with the 200th Anniversary of public education in Covington. To mark two centuries of academic excellence, the Foundation will host a prestigious black-tie optional affair on June 18 at the Covington Convention Center.

“We are marking history as we celebrate one of the finest individuals to ever emerge from Covington schools,” said Dan Francis, Foundation President. “As we honor this significant 200-year milestone, we invite our entire alumni community to join us for this once-in-a-lifetime celebration.”

Judge Moore, a proud 1970 graduate of Holmes High School, remains a titan of the Kentucky judiciary. After beginning his career in accounting with a degree from Northern Kentucky University and an MBA from Xavier University, he followed his calling to the law, earning his Juris Doctorate from Chase College of Law in 1980.

Following a successful private practice, Moore was appointed by Gov. Wilkinson to the Boone and Gallatin District Court, where he served with distinction for 28 years. Upon his retirement in 2019, he held the title of the longest-serving District Judge in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Despite his statewide impact, Moore’s heart remains in the classrooms of his youth. He grew up at 19th and Eastern Avenue. From his days at Sixth District Elementary School to the halls of Holmes High, he attributes his success to the dedicated educators who shaped his path. He still gets together with his classmates from Sixth District and Holmes.

“I am just honored and thankful for my family and friends,” Judge Moore said. “We tell the same stories, but the fish get a little bigger and golf scores get a little lower. I’ve just been so blessed.”

He said it was Covington teachers who made a lasting impact on him. Their examples, their expectations, guided his every decision.

“As I look back, I still remember the dedication of teachers like Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Stewart and Mrs. Culbertson,” Moore reflected. “The lessons learned early are the ones that stay with you forever.”

Judge Moore, who still works with the Holmes Alumni Association, said he was surprised when he was notified of the award.

“I am quite honored by this recognition; I don’t feel nearly worthy, but I will do my best. I am thankful,” Judge Moore said. “I am going to try to make all my friends and family proud of this award.”

Since 1997, the Covington Education Foundation has been dedicated to funding scholarships and empowering the students at Holmes High School. Help us continue this mission while honoring a local legend and 200 years of educational history.
