Kentucky Women in Agriculture is now accepting applications for its $1,000 college scholarship for women who are full-time students from their junior year through graduate school. Applicants must be enrolled in a Kentucky college or university, or an affiliate veterinary school, and be pursuing a degree in agriculture or a related field. The application deadline is June 30.

Over time, the scholarship has become one of the organization’s key initiatives, helping women gain the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in agricultural industries and strengthening the education portion of its mission. The program grew out of the organization’s broader mission to empower women through education, involvement, and action. The scholarship was designed as a direct investment in that mission, providing financial assistance while also encouraging leadership development within agriculture.

The scholarship is open to female Kentucky residents enrolled full time as college juniors, seniors or graduate students in agriculture-related programs who maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average. The organization is especially focused on supporting students who demonstrate a strong commitment to agriculture and a clear intention to pursue a career in the field.

Applicants are evaluated on their desire to work in agriculture, financial need, academic performance and extracurricular involvement. The selection committee looks for well-rounded students who are passionate about agriculture, committed to their education and engaged in their communities.

Supporting women pursuing agricultural careers

Investing in women is critical to agriculture’s future as the role of women in farming and agribusiness continues to expand. Programs like this help bridge financial gaps and provide the resources and confidence many students need to pursue leadership roles in the industry, such as farming, teaching, agricultural sales, corporate agribusiness, extension services, policy and agribusiness leadership.

By supporting students who plan to remain in or return to agriculture, the scholarship helps build a pipeline of skilled professionals who contribute to local economies, food systems and rural communities. Organization leaders say it also encourages leadership and advocacy that will help sustain agricultural priorities at the state and national levels.

Recent scholarship recipients highlight the variety of paths within the field. Kelsey Johnson, a graduate of agricultural economics, balances academic success with leadership roles, responsibilities on her family farm, and parenting children. Rebecca Grimsley, an agricultural education major, plans to teach and inspire future generations of agriculture students.

Funding the scholarship program

Funding for the scholarship program comes in part from proceeds raised during a silent auction held during the organization’s annual conference. Individuals and organizations interested in supporting the group’s programs can make a direct donation or contribute items.

Building the future of agriculture in Kentucky

By supporting students who plan to remain in or return to agriculture, the scholarship helps strengthen the agricultural workforce that is vital to the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Agriculture continues to be one of the state’s leading industries, and developing knowledgeable, skilled leaders is essential to sustaining farms, agribusinesses and rural communities across the state.

Leaders with Kentucky Women in Agriculture say programs like this scholarship not only assist individual students but also invest in the long-term health of Kentucky’s food systems, local economies and agricultural innovation. As more women enter and lead within the industry, the organization hopes the scholarship will continue helping build a strong future for agriculture throughout the Commonwealth.
