State marks milestone for most returned unclaimed property, Kentuckians encouraged to check database

Staff Report

The Kentucky State Treasurer’s office on Wedneday announced the Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Division has surpassed $100 million returned to Kentuckians.

The returned property set a record for the most returned at this point in any administration in the Commonwealth’s history.

“We’re not talking about numbers on a spreadsheet — we’re talking about real money going back to real people,” said Treasurer Mark Metcalf. “Crossing $100 million means helping Kentuckians pay bills, support their families, and invest back into their communities.”

The treasurer’s office has overseen an aggressive effort to reconnect Kentuckians with lost or unclaimed property, which includes forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, utility deposits, and other financial assets turned over to the state for safekeeping.

In recent weeks, the Treasury has processed claims ranging from a few dollars to tens of thousands.

“We made a decision early on: this money doesn’t belong in government accounts — it belongs in the hands of the people,” Metcalf said.

The treasurer’s office is encouraging all Kentuckians to check for unclaimed property, noting that significant funds remain available.

“There is still more money out there with someone’s name on it,” Metcalf said. “If you’ve never checked, now is the time.”

Kentuckians can search for unclaimed property at treasury.ky.gov or MissingMoney.com. Searches are free, secure, and easy to complete.
