Simon Kenton and Walton-Verona played their opening round games in the 8th Region baseball tournament on Sunday, but rain washed out seven other games involving local baseball and softball teams.
Simon Kenton defeated Woodford County, 4-0, in a game played at Lexington Catholic. The winning pitcher was junior Billy Dennis and seven Pioneers got hits with Logan Lawson and Caleb Uhl each getting two RBI.
The Pioneers (21-11) will play the winner of the South Oldham vs. Eminence game that was postponed to Monday in the region semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Thomas More Stadium in Florence.
Walton-Verona’s season ended with a 20-7 loss to North Oldham in a game that was moved to Brossart. It was the most runs given up by the Bearcats in more than 25 years, according to scores posted on the khssa.org website. Their final record is 23-13.
