WAVE Water Warrior Day June 8 to rally community support to protect rivers, lakes and oceans

The Commonwealth of Kentucky, the city of Newport, and Kenton, Boone and Campbell counties will officially observe WAVE Water Warrior Day on June 8, a celebration in conjunction with World Oceans Day June 8 and National Week of the Ocean the first week of June.

The day is dedicated to rallying our community around the protection of our rivers, lakes, and oceans and inspiring everyone to take concrete steps toward aquatic conservation.

Activities will include:

• Blue Lights Across the Region: In solidarity with WAVE Foundation’s mission, Paycor Stadium will light up blue June 8-10; Newport on the Levee and Newport Aquarium will be illuminated in brilliant blue on the week of June 8-13. This visual display will raise awareness of water’s vital role in our local ecosystem and beyond.

• Volunteer, Pledge & Gift: On Saturday June 13, WAVE will host volunteers for the 15th annual Riversweep, cleaning up the banks of the Ohio and Licking Rivers. All are welcome to register and join.

• Pledge & Gift at Newport on the Levee: Saturday June 13 from 3-6pm, visitors to Newport on the Levee are invited to sign the WAVE Water Warrior Pledge – a commitment to break up with single use plastics. Every pledge signer will receive a gift to help break reliance on single use plastics, as well as coupons for Levee businesses.

• Online Engagement & Support: Not in town? You can still join the movement! Visit wavefoundation.org to sign the pledge virtually. You can also make a tax-deductible donation in support of WAVE Foundation’s ongoing programs in environmental education, river cleanups, and youth stewardship initiatives.

• Visit WAVE Foundation, the Newport Aquarium Gift Shop and WAVE’s website to shop for environmentally responsible products and gifts.
