As the cost of everyday goods and services continues to rise, many families are looking for affordable ways to stay entertained close to home. According to recent inflation data, consumer prices have increased by approximately 3.8% over the past year. For those planning a staycation this summer, Kenton County Parks & Recreation offers a variety of free and low-cost activities that provide fun, learning, and relaxation for all ages.

Pickleball, anyone? Just one option. (KCP&R flyer)

Families with children can take advantage of three free weekly programs:

• Wednesdays, 9:30–11:30 a.m. at Middleton-Mills Park Shelter House #2 — Wild Wednesdays

• Thursdays, 9:30–11:30 a.m. at Pioneer Park Shelter House #1 — Science Thursdays.

All programs are held rain or shine and are free to attend.

For those seeking a relaxing evening close to home, Wine Down Wednesday will take place Aug. 26 from 6–9 p.m. at Independence’s Historic Courthouse. Live music will be provided by Jonny Estep and Lonesome Blend. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy an evening outdoors with family and friends.

Interested in learning a new sport? Kenton County Parks & Recreation is offering two free Pickleball 101 classes at Richardson Road Park:

• Monday, 9–11 a.m. — Pickleball 101 (ages 18 and older)
• Thursday, 5:30–7:30 p.m. — Pickleball 101 (ages 10 and older)

Participants who discover a love for the game can continue developing their skills through the Beginner Pickleball League. Designed for adults who have completed Pickleball 101 or have less than one year of playing experience, the league offers a welcoming environment to improve skills while meeting fellow players.

The league will meet on Mondays for four weeks beginning June 29 from 8–10 a.m. Registration is open now, and the cost is $20 for participants ages 18 and older.

Whether you’re looking for educational activities for the kids, a relaxing night out, or an opportunity to try a new sport, Kenton County Parks & Recreation offers plenty of affordable ways to make the most of summer. With many programs offered free of charge, residents can create lasting memories close to home without stretching their budgets.
