Bikes, skateboards and scooters equal epic summer fun for kids; use helmets to avoid head injuries

As the weather warms up, kids grab skateboards, bikes, scooters and roller skates from the garage and into the sun. While these things are great for healthy summer fun, your child should always wear a helmet to prevent serious head injuries.

“When discussing helmets with kids, I talk to them about how smart they are, so they must do everything possible to protect their brain with a helmet when riding,” said Marcy Duncan, a pediatrician with Golisano Children’s at UK.

Most children resist wearing a helmet, so it is important to teach them why helmet safety matters. Here’s how to start the conversation.

How do I make my child want to wear a helmet?

Show your child examples of professional athletes wearing a helmet for their safety. It can help your child to see that they aren’t the only ones who have to practice helmet safety — the professionals have to do it, too.

Additionally, putting a “No helmet, no ride” rule in effect in your home should help. That includes all adults in the home.

“It is important for parents to also wear a helmet both for protection and in order to model safe behavior for their children,” Duncan said. “Kids are more likely to wear a helmet if they see their parents doing the same.”

Allowing your child to pick out a helmet in a color or style they like may also help with this adjustment.

What helmet is the correct size for my child?

Helmets must not fit too tight. On the other hand, it is crucial for the helmet to not slide off or fit loosely. Having your child try several options can help you find the perfect fit.

If a helmet fits, the straps should form a “V” around your child’s ears.

It is important to recognize that there are specific helmets for certain activities. Bike helmets and football helmets are different, and the right helmet should be worn for the right activity.
