News briefs: KET young writer winner, McDaniel to prosecutors council, ACUE fund chair named


Turkey Foot Middle School student among winners of KET Young Writer’s Contest

Turkeyfoot Middle School student Nasir Tayabee has been named among the winners of KET’s 2026 Young Writer’s Contest.

Tayabee, who lives in Edgewood, was recognized in the middle school persuasive writing category for his article “What Technology Does to Humans.”

The annual contest invites students in grades Pre-K through high school to submit original works in the following categories: graphic novel, illustrated story, poetry, short story and persuasive writing. In honor of the nation’s 250th anniversary this year, prizes were also awarded in a special persuasive writing subcategory focused on civics.

Persuasive Writing topics ranged from civics‑focused essays and contemporary issues like the use of artificial intelligence to thought-provoking historical topics like “Would you re-enlist in the George Washington’s Army after experiencing Valley Forge?”

The contest received a total of 1,491 entries. Over 50 winners were chosen.

McDaniel named to Prosecutors Advisory Council

Attorney General Russell Coleman appointed of Renee McDaniel, of Kenton County, to the Prosecutors Advisory Council (PAC). McDaniel, a native of Williamsburgand a graduate of Centre College, will serve as one of two citizen members working to support Kentucky’s prosecutorial and law enforcement community.

For nearly two decades, McDaniel served as the Executive Director of the Kentucky Jailers Association. She owns Aggregate Management Services, overseeing daily operations in the Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati regions.

The 13-member Prosecutors Advisory Council consists of Attorney General Russell Coleman, who serves as chair, five Commonwealth’s Attorneys, five County Attorneys and two citizen members.  Along with the Office of the Attorney General, PAC co-sponsors the annual Kentucky Prosecutors Conference. PAC also oversees the preparation of the Child Sexual Abuse Prosecution Manual, which better equips prosecutors, law enforcement, and others to handle cases involving these young victims.

Karen Riegler chairs ACUE Annual Fund

Karen Riegler, of Union, serves as general chair of the 2025-2026 ACUE Annual Fund (Alliance for Catholic Urban Education). The ACUE is the centralized bookkeeping and fundraising arm of the five urban elementary schools of the Diocese of Covington.

MaryAnn Pietromonaco, of Villa Hills,is past chair of the 2024-2025 ACUE Annual Fund. She led a record-setting appeal and supports Riegler and the ACUE board in their pursuit of another successful appeal.

Last year’s annual appeal supported over 50% of the ACUE budget that funds the five ACUE schools, and in particular the tremendous need for tuition assistance.

The five schools include: Holy Cross Elementary, Latonia; Holy Trinity, Bellevue; Prince of Peace, Covington; St. Anthony, Taylor Mill; St. Augustine, Covington.

Both Riegler and Pietromonaco are members of the ACUE Development Advisory Board. The ACUE Annual Fund will close on June 30. All gifts to the fund are deeply appreciated.
