Dear Editor,
I’m writing to thank you for your series examining Kentucky’s animal‑abuse laws and the systemic gaps that allow even the most serious cases to go largely unpunished.

These articles offer a clear, unflinching look at patterns that are too often hidden: lenient outcomes, diversion agreements, and dismissals even in cases involving extreme cruelty.
I also want to recognize reporter R.G. Dunlop for the depth and steadiness of his work.
Reporting on misconduct involving sheriff’s deputies, county employees, and other government personnel is never easy for a local newsroom, and his documentation of these cases — and the institutional reluctance to address them — is a genuine public service.
This is journalism doing what it’s meant to do: bringing to light what isn’t easy to see but is essential to know.
Sincerely,
Sara Crane
