For 26 years, Northern Kentucky University’s Mayerson Student Philanthropy Project has given students hands-on experience in philanthropy by allowing them to evaluate local nonprofits and award grants to organizations making a difference in the community.
Since 1999, the program has engaged nearly 10,000 students and awarded more than $1.2 million to regional nonprofits.
Horizon Community Foundation supports the program through sponsorship of an annual course.
This year, students in Dr. Zach Hart’s Public Relations Writing class awarded a $2,000 grant to the Northern Kentucky Children’s Advocacy Center.
“Hands-on philanthropy gives students a unique opportunity to invest in causes they care about while learning how nonprofit organizations create community impact,” said Dr. Shauna Reilly, Assistant Vice Provost for Outreach and Engagement.
The program is housed within NKU’s Scripps Howard Center for Civic Engagement and was coordinated this year by Dr. Reiko Ozaki, Associate Professor of Social Work and Service Learning and Student Philanthropy Coordinator.
