Health department hosts event in observance of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

To address on-going stigma about HIV/AIDS among women and girls, the Northern Kentucky Health Department is hosting a showing of the Essence World AIDS Day video “Through Love of Self, Family and Community, Empowering Black Women to End AIDS,” at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 12 at the Mary Ann Mongan branch of the Kenton County Public Library, 502 Scott Blvd., Covington.
 
Hosted by Grammy winning singer Alicia Keys, the documentary features four inspiring women with HIV, and talks about what women can do to take care of themselves. A discussion facilitated by experienced sexuality educators will follow the film. Door prizes, snacks and HIV testing will also be available. The event is being coordinated with observances of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.
 
While HIV still impacts more men than women, about 17 percent of all cases of HIV in Kentucky are in women. A majority of these women report heterosexual sex as a risk factor for exposure.
