Covington Police detain two 14-year-old boys as suspects in overnight shooting near City Heights


Police have detained two 14-year-old males as suspects in a Tuesday night shooting incident in Covington.

Covington Police responded to a report of a person being shot at Highland Avenue and Jefferson Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. At about the same time, another call came in for a report of a shooting victim at St. Elizabeth Hospital Covington.

covington-pdPolice responded to both locations and, based on information gathered, began looking for two suspects in red shirts that were last seen running toward the City Heights Housing Complex.

Police say two suspects matching the description of those involved in the shooting emerged from a wooded area that leads to City Heights.

The police apprehended the suspects after a short foot pursuit.

The suspects are not being identified because of their age. They were housed in the Campbell County Regional Juvenile Detention Center overnight and a detention hearing is scheduled to take place this morning in Kenton County.

The victim was flown to UC Medical Center in Cincinnati and his condition is unknown.

The Covington Police Criminal Investigations Unit is investigating the incident.

The Covington Police Department issued the following statement regarding the incident:

On October 18th, 2016 at approximately 10:14 PM, the Covington Police responded to the area of Highland Avenue and Jefferson Avenue for a report of a person who had been shot.  While officers were responding, information became available that a person who had been shot was at Saint Elizabeth Covington Hospital.  Officers responded to both locations and began the investigation.  Information gathered on both scenes indicated that the victim was shot by two subjects wearing red shirts.  The suspects were last seen running from the scene in the direction of City Heights Housing Complex.

 Patrol units established a perimeter and two suspects were located emerging from the wooded area that leads in to the City Heights Housing Complex.  When approached by an officer, the suspects fled and a short foot pursuit ensued.  The suspects were eventually captured by other units in the area.  

 The suspects are both 14 year old juveniles and due to their age, their information will not be released.  Both suspects were lodged in the Campbell County Regional Juvenile Detention Center pending a detention hearing to take place this morning in Kenton County.

 The victim was flown to UC Medical Center by helicopter from St. Elizabeth Covington.  His medical status is not known to us at the time of this release.

 Our Criminal Investigations Bureau is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this case.
