Obituary For Betty Lou Smith

Betty Lou Smith, nee Rogers, 85, was reunited with and found her rest in Jesus, her Lord and Savior on November 25, 2025. Born on July 12, 1940, in Whitley City, KY, she was the daughter of the late Marion Rogers and Mabel Stevens Rogers.

In 1957, in a small town in McCreary County, KY, a young Betty met the love of her earthly life in Brent Smith. She and Brent married and started their family, moving from the southeastern part of the state to the northernmost part in order to build a better life. Betty henceforth called Independence, KY home. She was a dedicated mother and homemaker all her life. Her greatest delight and source of elation was spending quality time with her grandkids and the “bushel” of great grandkids she had.

Betty loved to mill and walk about the shopping mall. And although she relished the luxury of dining out from time to time at her favorites Olive Garden and Red Lobster, it was Church that truly fed and nourished Sister Betty’s soul. She was a faithful member of Community Family Church for 40 years. It is now to the Holy Spirit that we look to comfort and strengthen each and every heart in the wake of Betty’s passing on.

Betty was the dear mother of Glenn Dewey Smith (Teresa Ann), Douglas Smith (Lisa Jo), and Deborah Smith; sister to Anna Laura Welsh; and a treasured meemaw, mamaw and grandma as well as a great-grandma to 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was welcomed into Heaven with open arms by her beloved husband Brent Albert Smith, her son Michael Smith, her parents, as well as her siblings Allene Huss, Margaret Ferry and Bill Rogers.

Betty will be laid to rest and her resurrection celebrated at Independence Cemetery on Wednesday, December 3, 2025 at 1:00 PM.

Memorial donations in Betty’s honor may be made online to the Community Family Church Building Fund.
