Obituary For Gregory D. Stoppelwerth

Gregory D. Stoppelwerth, 66, of Union, KY, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, December 28, 2025. The son of Gerald and Barbara {Kemper} Stoppelwerth, Greg was born in Covington, KY on August 17, 1959. Greg graduated from Dixie Heights High School, Class of 1977. He later earned his engineering degree from the University of Kentucky. Greg spent over 30 years at Duke Energy, retiring as a Senior Engineer, a career he truly enjoyed.

In his younger years, Greg loved being outdoors sailing his boat, The Starburst, and running cross country (he still holds the record of the Fastest Ever 2-Mile Run at Dixie Heights)! Greg had a lifelong love of music; he enjoyed singing, playing his guitar, and took special joy in teaching members of his family how to play. Known as a true handyman, he had a gift for fixing things and never hesitated to lend his skills to help others. Greg could also be found cheering on the UK Wildcats and the Cincinnati Bengals.

Above all else, Greg loved his family dearly. He was a loving husband, a proud father, and a cherished grandfather, who affectionately knew him as “G-Stop.”

Greg’s legacy will be carried by his loving wife of over 43 years, Mary Beth Stoppelwerth; children, David Stoppelwerth and Christina (Jeff) Christ; mother, Barbara Stoppelwerth; mother-in-law, Kathleen Darpel; grandchildren, Palmyr and Parker Stoppelwerth, Easton and Evey Smith, and Brooks Christ; and siblings, Keith (Kat) Stoppelwerth, Robin (Jeff) Burger, and Donald (Angela) Stoppelwerth.

Greg was preceded in death by his father, Gerald “Jerry” Stoppelwerth and his father-in-law, George Darpel.

A visitation will be held from 11am to 12pm with a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 12pm on Saturday, January 3rd at St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church, 10272 US-42 Union, KY 41091. Greg will be laid to rest at Saint Mary Cemetery in Ft. Mitchell immediately following his services.

I only knew Greg a short time, but found him to be very kind and easy to talk with. He was willing to do a few things actively and everyone at Story Point liked him. I felt honored to know him.
