Obituary For James Dewey Long
James Dewey Long, age 89, of Covington, Kentucky passed away on May 2nd, 2026, after a brief illness. He was affectionally nicknamed The Greek, Toolworks or Uncle Toolworks by his many friends and his extended family of the George’s and George’s Tavern.
Born on August 13th, 1936, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Jim was the son of Dewey and Despoena Long. He grew up in Price Hill where friends and neighbors came to know him for his steady kindness and willingness to lend a hand. As graduate of Western Hills High School, Jim excelled as a lineman on the football team.
Jim proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1954 through 1958 He was honorably discharged from the USAF, carrying forward the discipline, humility, and sense of service that shaped the rest of his life.
Following military service, Jim worked for The American Tool Works Company, thus his nickname “Toolworks.” He found joy in thoroughbred horse racing—both as a trainer and a dedicated handicapper—especially at Turfway/Latonia and River Downs. It was only proper that he “headed down the stretch to the finish line” of life on Derby Day, 2026.
Jim also enjoyed collecting modern and vintage watches for refurbishment. He was a long-time and loyal volunteer for church festivals at St. Anthony of Padua. He leaves many friends past and present from The Colony Retirement Center, St. Anthony of Padua Church, George’s Tavern and the entire George Family.
His remains were donated to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at St. Anthony of Padua Maronite Catholic Church, 2530 Victory Parkway, Cincinnati, OH 45206.
Contributions may be made in his memory to St. Anthony of Padua Church.
