Obituary For James Thomas Murphy

James Thomas Murphy, affectionately known as "Murph," passed away on May 19, 2026, in Ft. Thomas, Kentucky. Born on October 16, 1954, in Covington, Kentucky, Murph lived a life marked by devotion to family, faith, and community.

Murph dedicated nearly 35 years of his career to St. Elizabeth, where he retired after 34 years and 10 months of committed service. Alongside this, he also spent time as a mutual clerk at Turfway and Keeneland, contributing his diligent work ethic to these respected institutions. His professional journey was characterized by steadfast commitment and a simple, hardworking spirit.

A man who loved to have fun and possessed a joyful nature, Murph was known for his selflessness, strong faith, and peacemaking qualities. Wise and full of warmth, he could always lighten the mood with a well-timed joke. A simple man at heart, he cherished working, being surrounded by the people he loved, and regularly attending church, where his faith was a cornerstone of his life.

Among his cherished pastimes, Murph delighted in sitting on his bench reading his Bible, playing games and taking trips with the grandkids. He had a profound love for animals, nurturing and feeding them with kindness. Coffee was a beloved comfort, and classic TV shows on MeTV brought him hours of enjoyment.

Murph was a very supportive father and grandfather, always proudest of his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Janice Killion-Murphy (nee Handy); his son, Jayme Dustin (Bren) Murphy; his daughters, Jody (Harold) Thompson and Leanna (Alexander) Williams; his twelve grandchildren; his brother, Joseph (Audrey) Murphy; and his sisters, Jennifer (Martin) Trondle and Mona (the late Angelo) Caminiti. He is also remembered fondly by several nieces and nephews, as well as a host of other family members and friends who were blessed to know him.

Murph was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Ruby Murphy (nee Hyatt), and his son, James Matthew Murphy.

Visitation will take place on May 31, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, followed by a memorial service at Newcomer Funeral Home, Northern Kentucky, located at 4350 Dixie Hwy in Erlanger, KY.
