Obituary For John C. Alexander

John C. Alexander, aged 97, passed away on September 28, 2024 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, surrounded by family. He was predeceased by his wife, Gennie, and son, David, as well as his parents and three brothers.

After attending Cumberland College where he met Gennie, John went on to graduate with degrees from the University of Kentucky and Xavier University. He spent 35 years in education, mostly in the Fort Thomas Kentucky School District. He was a teacher at Highlands Junior High School and later served as the principal of Ruth Moyer Elementary School for twenty years. His impact on the children who went through Ruth Moyer was often evidenced by the number of people who would stop him in public all across the country to say hi, even decades after his retirement.

His devotion to the field of education is exemplified by his service on the Boards of the Kentucky Education Association, the Kentucky Association of School Administrators, and the Association of Elementary School Principals, of which he served as president. He also served on the Commission of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

After retiring from education, John was a realtor with Coldwell Banker and served on the Board of Directors of the Wynds of Florence HOA.

John and his wife Gennie were docents for the Dinsmore Homestead of Boone County and volunteers at the Aronoff Center and the Playhouse in the Park.

He enjoyed reading, antiquing, and gardening, but he especially loved to travel. He and Gennie visited all fifty states and made several trips to Europe. He later traveled to Australia and New Zealand with his son John. In his later years, he was a resident of the Barrington of Fort Thomas where he enjoyed socializing, dining, and card games with his friends. He loved to talk about politics and current events, never short on opinions about a variety of topics.

John, affectionately known by family as Poppy, is survived by his daughter Dianne of Fort Thomas; son John Kent (Helene) of Fruitland Park, Florida; a sister, JoAnn; and brother, Danny. Survivors also include his grandchildren Alicia (Maria Guarascio) Reitano of Brooklyn, NY; Andrea C. Reitano and Erika (Jeff) Peter of Fort Thomas; Bryan and Andrew Alexander of Indiana; and his great grandsons, Elliott and Everett Peter and Alben Burkhardt, who were the apple of his eye!

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Thomas, and a previous member of the First Baptist Church of Fort Thomas.

While his stature was small, his presence and impact were tremendous and will leave a huge hole in the hearts of his family and close friends.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Thomas or the Fort Thomas Education Foundation. Visitation and service will be held at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home in Fort Thomas on October 25th from 3:30-5:30.
