Obituary For Joseph Raymond Schickling

Joseph “Joe” Raymond Schickling, age 81, of Cincinnati, Ohio, formerly of Northern Kentucky, passed away on April 25, 2026, at Blue Ash Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.

As a young boy, Joe could often be found playing baseball, working at Findlay Market, or selling newspapers, early signs of the work ethic and personality that would define his life. He was a graduate of St. Xavier High School and went on to earn his finance degree from Xavier University in 1967 followed by his MBA.

Joe spent nearly 40 years as an investment broker, working throughout downtown Cincinnati, including, as he would proudly note, on all four corners of 4th and Walnut. He was known for his sharp mind, quick wit, and unmistakable voice, especially to the many young athletes he coached in basketball and baseball over the years.

Above all, Joe was a devoted father and grandfather. Affectionately known as “Papa Schicks,” he had a unique and often humorous way of teaching life’s lessons. He was sarcastically and loudly funny, full of one-liners, and always ready with a clever remark. His love of Xavier basketball, horse racing, a good cigar, and a cold Miller Lite were staples of his life. He also enjoyed music ranging from Frank Sinatra and big band classics to The Rolling Stones and John Mellencamp.

Joe was an avid collector of pens and a dedicated fan of MASH* and Cheers. A history buff at heart, he especially loved exploring cities through walking tours—much to the occasional dismay of his teenage children. Though his health declined following a stroke, Joe remained defined by his humor, resilience, and deep love for his family.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Schickling, and his son, Joseph Raymond Schickling II.

He is survived by his children: Meredith (Steve) Briede, Mara (Steve) Kreiling, and Lance (Stephanie) Schickling; his former wife, Denise Schickling; his sister, Patricia Schickling; and his daughter-in-law, Nicole Schickling. He was a proud grandfather to Mark, Morgan, and Matt Briede; Jack and Cooper Schickling; Michael and Haley Kreiling; and Tucker Schickling.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2026, from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Crescent Springs, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:30 AM. Joe will be laid to rest at Mother of God Cemetery in Latonia, Kentucky.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Advancement Office at St. Xavier High School, 600 W. North Bend Rd., Cincinnati, Ohio 45224, or online at www.stxavier.org/memorial.
