Obituary For Kenneth Lamont Smith

At age 77, Kenneth Lamont Smith, lovingly known as Lamont since high school, passed away Friday, August 21st, 2026, after a 15-month battle with cancer. Born Christmas Eve of 1948 in St. Petersburg, Florida, Lamont was the second son of a preacher man, William Cecil Smith, and Edna Smith (née Edge), who both preceded him in death.

A doting father of two, but a fatherly figure to many, Lamont was a devoted husband, all-weather friend, dependable mentor, and respected colleague. After graduating Clemson University and the Medical University of South Carolina, Lamont specialized in Emergency Medicine at the University of Louisville, where he completed his residency. During the 40 years he worked as an emergency physician, Lamont saved many lives and improved many more. He enjoyed cards, fishing, and fine port, bourbon, and cigars — all in moderation (most of the time). Above all, he delighted in telling jokes among good company, which he had a knack for finding and keeping.

Lamont is survived by Marie Smith (née Redfearn), his high school sweetheart and wife of 57 years. He is also survived by his children, Nathan (wife, Yi Lin) and Emily; his older brother Fred (wife Beverly) and younger brother Larry (wife Gale); his niece Carrie (husband, Jimmy and their child, Jack) and nephew Ryan (wife, Magan and their children, Wynn and Sophie); and many other loving family members and friends.

In accordance with his wishes, Lamont has been cremated in the Clemson University hat (Go Tigers!) that he wore during their games, which he frequently traveled to attend. A remembrance will be held at Linnemann Funeral Homes (1940 Burlington Pike, Burlington, KY 41005) on Saturday, September 12th, from 2 PM to 4 PM, where guests are encouraged to share stories, drink to his memory, and celebrate a remarkable life.

Lamont’s family is deeply grateful for the heartfelt care, support, and kindness of the University of Cincinnati Blood Cancer Healing Center throughout Lamont’s treatment. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Lamont’s name to the Hematologic Malignancies/Bone Marrow Transplant fund.
