Obituary For Michael A. Smith

Michael “Mike” Smith, 77, of Newport, Kentucky, passed away on April 7, 2026. Born on February 28, 1949, Mike lived a life defined by dedication, strength, and a deep love for his wife Cindy and his family. He was the glue that held his family together, a steady pillar who gave them strength, guidance, and courage.

Mike was a proud U.S. Army Vietnam veteran who honorably served his country and was awarded the Purple Heart and the National Defense Service Medal. Following his military service, he devoted 42 years to the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier. He also served as a union president for Northern Kentucky and acted as a liaison to Washington.

Known as a strong, hardworking, and straightforward man, Mike was someone you could always count on. He was a true “straight shooter.” He spoke honestly and never sugarcoated the truth. While his words weren’t always easy to hear, they were always rooted in love and respect—and he earned the respect of everyone around him.

Above all, Mike loved his family. He shared a deep and lasting love with his wife, Cindy Smith, and was a proud father to his son, Michael Jr. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Brittanie and Alex, and his great-grandchildren, Bella, Logan, Myla, Carter, and Rylee, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.

Mike is also survived by his brothers, Bud and Sam, whom he loved and cherished deeply, along with many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 17th from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM, with a short service from 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, 822 York Street, Newport, KY 41071.

A burial service will take place on Saturday, April 18th at 11:00 AM at Floral Hills Cemetery, 5336 Old Taylor Mill Road, Covington, KY 41015.

Mike will be remembered for his strength, his honesty, his service, and most of all, the love he gave so freely to his family. His legacy will live on in all who knew and loved him.

“A life well lived, a man deeply loved, and a legacy that will carry on through every life he touched.”
