He bravely served our country as a member of the United States Army. He earned his B.A. in Business from Villa Madonna College (now Thomas More University) and went on to have a successful career at General Electric Evendale (now GE Aviation), before retiring after 47 years.
In middle school, Mick (a.k.a. Mike) served in the Bishop’s Choir at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, where he developed a love for singing, which he carried throughout his life.
He had a passion for high school sports and enjoyed attending the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame inductions. He was an avid fan of Notre Dame football, UK basketball, the Cincinnati Reds, and Cincinnati Bengals. Nothing brought him more joy though than time with his family, especially with his grandchildren, “Papa’s Gang.”
Mick is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Barbara A. Cooney (nee Lohre); children, Barbara A. Bailey (Douglas), Michael J. Cooney (Amanda), Mary Kathleen Nelms (Roger), Todd S. Cooney (Lisa) and Brian P.J. Cooney (Elana); sister, Sylvia A. Wagner; and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Shawn B. Bailey and siblings, Jack E. Rogers, Charlotte D. Rogers and Ronald P. Cooney.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Crescent Springs, KY from 9:00 AM until the Mass of Christian Burial begins at 11:00 AM. Committal prayers and military honors will immediately follow at St. John Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell, KY. After the interment, the family invites you to join them for a celebration of life at Villa Hills Civic Club, Villa Hills, KY.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers are suggested to St. Joseph Catholic Church 2470 Lorraine Ct, Crescent Springs, KY 41017 and/or Newport Central Catholic High School 13 Carothers Rd, Newport, KY 41071.
