Roy Kenneth Nickell, 93, of Florence, Kentucky, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at Florence Park Care Center. The son of the late Roy I. Nickell and Margaret {Williamson} Nickell, Roy was born in Covington, KY on November 16, 1932.

A proud United States Army veteran, Roy honorably served during the Korean War. He was a longtime member of American Legion Post #275 in Independence and a dedicated Mason with Independence Lodge #123 since 1956. In June 2002, he was honored as a Kentucky Colonel.

Roy enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He loved square dancing with his wife, Ollie, camping, working in his yard, and mowing the lawn. He especially enjoyed fresh fruit, buttermilk and cornbread, and listening to country and gospel music. Roy was loved by many and never met a stranger. His kind heart, friendly nature, and love for others will be remembered by all who knew him.

He will be deeply missed by his wife of almost 70 years, Ollie {Tackett} Nickell; children, Gwen Sanders, Amy (Dave) Roberts, and Margaret (Tony) Miller; grandchildren, Abby Dumitt, Kari Duncan, Thomas Hughes, Teri Roberts, and Brin Dahl; his 14 great-grandchildren; and his nephew, Jeff Lohmoeller.

In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his son, Roy C. Nickell, and his sister, Ruth Lohmoeller.

A visitation will be held between 10 AM and 12 PM with a funeral service beginning at 12 PM on Tuesday, July 21st at Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home, 8461 Dixie Hwy Florence, KY 41042. Roy will be laid to rest at Independence Cemetery where military rites will be held.
