Obituary For Terry W. Hughes

Terry Hughes passed away on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Terry lived a life rooted in faith, family, friendship, and hard work. Known for his intelligence, generosity, quiet strength, and unwavering integrity, he touched countless lives through his kindness and loyalty.

Born in Bellevue, Kentucky, to Raymond and Janet Hughes, Terry was the oldest of three children. He graduated from Dayton High School in 1951, where he played football on the state championship team. While attending the University of Kentucky, he was drafted into the United States Army in 1953 and served in Alaska. He would go on to graduate from the University of Cincinnati with a B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1969.

Terry met the love of his life, Joan Poston, in Dayton, Kentucky. They married on April 11, 1959, and shared 67 wonderful years together. Terry often said that marrying Joan was his greatest accomplishment, crediting her with making him a better person.

Terry built a successful career as City Engineer for the City of Covington. A hardworking and dedicated father, he always made time for his children, Matt, Monica, and Patrick, and took great pride in their lives and accomplishments.

Family meant everything to Terry. He cherished his seven grandchildren, enjoyed annual family trips to Hilton Head, and treasured the simple moments spent with Joan and their loved ones. He was also an avid reader, a loyal fan of the Cincinnati Reds, Bengals, and Kentucky Wildcats basketball, and a devoted companion to the many rescued dogs he welcomed into his home. He especially valued his lifelong friendships and enjoyed gathering with friends at the Elks Lodge and Molly Malone’s in Covington.

Terry and Joan endured the heartbreaking loss of their daughter, Monica, who passed away at the age of 33. During this difficult time, Terry found strength in his faith.

Terry lived each day with gratitude, embraced life as it came, and always made time for the people who mattered most. He will be remembered for his kindness, dependability, strong work ethic, and deep love for his family and friends. Though he will be dearly missed, his legacy of love, faith, and generosity will live on in all those whose lives he touched.

Memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington, Kentucky. Mass of Christian Burial will follow the visitation at 11:30 a.m. at the church. The family will have a reception at Molly Malones following Mass.
