Fall 2014 turned out to be a stellar semester for Northern Kentucky University’s student-athletes, who combined to post the highest cumulative grade point average since NKU began recording student-athletes’ grades in 1983. NKU’s 3.22 fall 2014 GPA topped the previous record of 3.15 achieved in the spring of 2013.
“I am extremely proud of our student-athletes and how they represent Northern Kentucky University and the NKU athletic department,” said Academic Advisor Debbie Kirch. “The success they achieved in the classroom this semester was a direct result of all their hard work and commitment, which has also translated into athletic success.”
This marks the seventh-consecutive semester in which NKU student-athletes have posted a 3.00 GPA or better.
Men’s tennis posted a 3.712 GPA to lead 14 programs which registered GPAs exceeding 3.00, including five teams that set program marks last semester: baseball (3.157), men’s golf (3.117), men’s soccer (3.086), women’s soccer (3.498) and men’s tennis.
In addition to men’s tennis, four teams registered GPAs above 3.5. Volleyball posted the second-highest GPA in the department at 3.633, while women’s cross country and women’s tennis checked in a 3.612 and 3.512, respectively.
Of NKU’s 258 student-athletes registered for fall classes, 95 posted a GPA of at least 3.50. Fifty-eight of those student-athletes were named to the Dean’s List for achieving GPAs in the 3.6-3.99 range. Fifteen student-athletes sported a perfect 4.0 GPA and were named to the President’s Honors List.
Northern Kentucky Athletics will host an Academic Recognition Night in conjunction with the men’s basketball game on Thursday, Jan. 22 against North Florida.
“We are fortunate to have coaches who actively recruit outstanding students and athletes,” said Director of Athletics Ken Bothof. “This sends a strong message to donors, fans and fellow students that our student-athletes have their priorities in order and are worthy of their support!”
The Norse have experienced an equal amount of success in competition this season. Women’s soccer, men’s soccer and volleyball each qualified for the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament in their first season eligible, and all three programs won a postseason game. Men’s cross country star J.J. Webber repeated as A-Sun champion and league runner of the year, while leading the team to a runner-up finish in the conference championship.
