Thomas More women cap second straight undefeated season with romp over St. Vincent


Junior guard forward Sydney Moss (St. Albans, W.Va./Boone County (Ky.) scored a game-high 40 points to help No. 1-ranked Thomas More College women’s basketball team cap an undefeated regular season with a 91-59 win over Saint Vincent College Saturday in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) game at the Robert S. Carey Center in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

With the win, the Saints complete the regular season at 25-0 overall and 18-0 in the PAC. The undefeated regular season is the fourth in program history and second-straight. Thomas More has won 71 regular season games dating back to an overtime loss to Calvin College on Nov. 23, 2012.

The Saints have also won 64 straight PAC regular season games with their last conference loss being a 68-65 loss at Saint Vincent on Jan. 14, 2012. With the loss, the Bearcats fall to 21-4 overall and 15-3 in the PAC.

Saint Vincent jumped out to an early 6-3 lead when Taylor Mathers made a jumper with 16:44 to play in the first half. Thomas More answered with a 19-0 run capped by a three-pointer by senior guard Sydni Wainscott (Erlanger, Ky./Simon Kenton) to build a 22-6 lead with 11:25 to play in the opening half.

The Bearcats answered with an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 22-14 with 9:43 to play in the half when Drew Meeker made a three-pointer. The Saints closed out the half on a 28-16 run to extend the lead to 50-30 at halftime when freshman forward Nikki Kiernan (Cold Springs, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) made one-of-two free-throws with 29-seconds to play in the half.

Thomas More shot 62.1 percent (18-of-29) from the field in the first half, including 71.4 percent (five-of-seven) from behind the three-point arc.

Moss recorded her eighth double-double of the season as she pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Abby Owings (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) joined Moss in double-figure scoring with a season-high 20 points to go with a team-high six assists and four steals.

Junior forward Alexa Santamaria (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) just missed double-figure scoring with eight points, while she blocked a team-high three shots.

Thomas More will be the No. 1-seed in next week’s PAC Championship Tournament and have a bye into the tournament’s semifinal round. The Saints will host a team to be determined at 6 p.m. next Friday (Feb. 27) at the Connor Convocation Center.

Thomas More men fall to Saint Vincent

The Thomas More College men’s basketball team fell 81-72 to Saint Vincent College Saturday in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) game at the Robert S. Carey Center in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 16-9 overall and 11-5 in the PAC. With the win, the Bearcats improve to 19-6 overall and 14-2 in the PAC.

Senior forward Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) led the team in scoring and rebounding with game-high-tying 16 points and seven rebounds. Joining him in double-figure scoring was sophomore guard/forward Nate McGovney (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) with 14 points and a game-high five assists, Williams with 12 points and Mays with 10 points.

The Saints will be the No. 4-seed in next week’s PAC Championship Tournament. Thomas More will host No. 5-seed Thiel College in a quarterfinal game on Tuesday (Feb. 24) at 7 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center
