The Kentucky Thoroughbred Breeders’ Incentive Fund is distributing more than $10 million in awards, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission announced Wednesday.
The KTBIF requires owners to board mares in Kentucky from the time of breeding until the birth of the foal. Incentive payments are based on the foal’s eventual winnings on the racetrack.
More than 4,000 races were eligible for awards for KTBIF horses winning in Kentucky, across the United States and Group 1, 2 and 3 pattern races in Canada, England, France and Ireland. KTBIF horses won races in 32 states and four countries, capturing 270 graded races in the United States – including Untapable’s win in the 140 Longines Kentucky Oaks.
For the second consecutive year, Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey, owners of Ramsey Farm in Jessamine County top the award list with 82 wins at 34 racetracks – including wins at all five Kentucky racetracks.
“The continued work of the Ramsey’s epitomizes how strong the breeding operations are in Kentucky,” said Gov. Steve Beshear. “Their impressive number of winners, combined with Kentucky-bred horses winning in five countries, shows the world that indeed, Kentucky is the Horse Capital of the World.”
Since 2006, more than more than $107 million has been awarded to Kentucky breeders for winning eligible races across the globe.
The KTBIF was implemented in 2005 to ensure the strength and growth of the horse industry in Kentucky. The fund receives 80 percent of the 6 percent sales tax paid when breeding a stallion to a mare in the Commonwealth. The KTBIF is administered by the KHRC.
