A deadline for employers to file for a certificate to receive a tax credit for hiring employees in a target group has been extended to April 30 by the Internal Revenue Service. The extension gives employers additional time to obtain the certification for an employee hired between Jan. 1 – Dec. 31, 2014, who qualifies for the federal Work Opportunity Tax Credit.
For employers to receive a tax credit, they must hire an individual who meets the criteria of at least one of nine target groups, including unemployed veterans; ex-felons; qualified summer youth workers and recipients of long-term government assistance programs. This deadline extension will give employers an opportunity to meet those requirements for employees hired last year. For more information about the target groups, click here under the “employer section” and click on “tax credits.”
To obtain certification, Kentucky employers must submit IRS Form 8850 and ETA Form 9061 to the Kentucky Work Opportunity Tax Credit Online System or mail the forms to the Kentucky Career Center, 275 E. Main St., 2WA, Frankfort, KY 40621. Employers can submit applications via the online system here.
