NKU’s Doss, Roush earn All-Atlantic Sun Conference second team honors


Northern Kentucky’s Melody Doss and Christine Roush have each been named to the All-Atlantic Sun second team following their performance on the floor this season.

The Atlantic Sun office announced the selections as it prepares for the conference’s postseason tournament, which is scheduled to start on Friday. Doss and Roush will take the court at Regents Hall with their teammates as the Norse welcome South Carolina Upstate for a first-round contest at 7 p.m.

“We are very excited for Melody and for Christine,” NKU head coach Dawn Plitzuweit said. “They have both been very integral to our success in Atlantic Sun play, and it is great to see them being recognized for their efforts.

“What is very special about both of them is that they have received these honors while putting the team first. They truly are willing to do whatever it takes for their team and for their teammates to be as successful as possible. Melody and Christine are leaders for our program, and they are looking forward to getting back out on the court and participating in the Atlantic Sun tournament on Friday.”

Doss and Roush were the top two scorers for NKU, which enters postseason posted a 17-12 overall record and an 8-6 mark in the Atlantic Sun. They helped the Norse capture their 32nd consecutive winning season with a 68-64 victory over Kennesaw State in The Bank of Kentucky Center on Feb. 25, which also helped NKU clinch a first-round home contest.

Doss, a senior forward from Greenwood, Indiana, enters the Atlantic Sun Championship as the team’s leading scorer, averaging 13.6 points per game, and she pulled down 4.7 rebounds a game. She also topped the team in field goals attempted (355) and field goals made (145). Doss’ 394 total points this season ranks fifth among Atlantic Sun players, and her 80.6 percent (58-for-72) from the free-throw line is also fifth in the conference.

Over her four-year career, Doss has accumulated 1,101 points and currently sits 22nd on NKU’s all-time scorers list. She needs just 10 more points to move ahead of Clare Lester (1981-85) and Nancy Dickman (1980-85), who are tied in 20th with 1,110 career points. Doss, who earned first-team all-conference honors as a junior, has pulled down 487 rebounds, which is 31st in program history, and she has turned away 84 shots to land seventh.

Roush, a junior guard from Louisville, Kentucky, brings a 13.2 scoring average into postseason play, and she leads the team and the Atlantic Sun in free-throw shooting at 87.2 percent (109-for-125) and 3-point accuracy, knocking down 37.0 percent (54-for-146) of her attempts from long range.

Roush recorded 38 assists, 37 steals and 24 blocked shots in her third season with the Norse. Against Atlantic Sun opponents, she averaged 15.1 points per contest to lead NKU.

On Dec. 15, Roush scored a career-high 29 points behind five 3-pointers and a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. She scored in double figures 20 times this season, including six 20-plus point performances. Roush recorded her first-career double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead NKU to a 68-62 victory over Stetson on Jan. 29 in The Bank of Kentucky Center.
