The Carnegie’s 2014-15 gallery season continues with the opening of “Now Here: Theoretical Landscapes” on Friday, March 13. The exhibition will open with a complimentary reception from 6 – 9 p.m.
This exhibition surveys a group of artists that create spaces and environments in their work that, though grounded in reality, suggest altered sensibilities. Such dislocation in art is an effective way to ask the viewer to consider their own relationship to real and imagined landscapes. The landscape is one of the enduring subjects that artists have explored throughout time. “Now Here” uses the landscape as a springboard into a multitude of concepts, environments and objects.
“Last season, “Recognized” explored contemporary portraiture being made in the region,” said Matt Distel, Exhibitions Director for The Carnegie. “This exhibition similarly seeks to find an expansive definition of landscape as applied by artists working in a wide variety of media. “Now Here” asks what creates a landscape and what does a landscape contain.”
Artists featured in the exhibition include Sharon Butler, David Callahan, Valerie Fuchs, Joe Girandola, Marc Lambert, Caleb Marhoover, Tim McMichael, Meddling with Nature, Emily Hanako Momohara, Bill Ross, Kathy Salchow, Bob Scheadler, Michael Scheurer, Michael Stillion, The Girls Coloring Space (Kathleen Brannigan, Krista Gregory, Jamie Muenzer), Joey Versoza, Christy Wittmer, Clint Woods, and C. Jacqueline Wood.
The opening reception is free to attend and includes light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. In addition to the reception, the community is invited to attend a special preview conversation between The Carnegie’s Matt Distel and exhibiting artists in the galleries at 5:30 p.m.
After opening night, the exhibition will be available for viewing through April 18, 2015, during regular gallery hours, Wednesday – Saturday 12 – 5 p.m.
