The seventh annual Shop and Share Day, a one-day goods drive to benefit Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence shelters across the state, was a success. The effort raised $793,842.79 in combined goods and monetary donations over the weekend.
“Kentuckians answered the call to service last Saturday, donating their time and money to support victims of domestic violence,” First Lady Jane Beshear said. “I am proud of our volunteers’ incredible work and of the tremendous generosity of shoppers who donated goods. These contributions will help ease the financial burdens on our domestic violence shelters, and allow staffers to better serve victims and their families.”
“The staff and clients at KCADV shelters throughout the state are extremely grateful for First Lady Jane Beshear and the Shop and Share initiative,” said Darlene Thomas, executive director of KCADA.
“Since 2008, Shop and Share has raised more than $3 million in goods and funds to help support our centers,” Thomas continued. “The donations help offset our costs and allow more of our funding to go directly towards support services for domestic violence victims and their families. In addition to the goods and funding, the awareness raised for domestic violence abuse prevention and available services has been invaluable.”
Shop and Share Day was held Saturday, March 28, at Kroger, Food City and Super Dollar Discount Food stores across the state. Volunteers at each store collected goods from shoppers such as nonperishable food items, personal care products and school supplies. One hundred percent of the collected goods and monetary donations for Shop and Share go to KCADV shelters.
“I had the pleasure of visiting several Kroger stores on Saturday during Shop and Share,” said Tim McGurk, public affairs manager for Kroger Co.’s Louisville Division. “It was gratifying to see our associates, our customers and all of the volunteers working together to support the well-being of women across Kentucky. Kroger applauds the First Lady’s leadership and we hope to support Shop and Share for many years to come.”
Organizational partners for 2015 Shop and Share include the First Lady’s Office, KCADV, Kroger, Food City, Super Dollar stores, the Kentucky Commission on Women, Kentucky General Federation of Women’s Clubs, the Girl Scouts of Kentucky’s Wilderness Road Council, the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana and the Kentucky Drug Court.
