Schworer was a physician specializing in pulmonology/respiratory diseases and allergies. He began his practice in 1960. A firm believer in the importance of education, Schworer put himself through pharmacy school and then medical school to become a general practitioner. After serving in the military, Schworer pursued additional education to become a specialist in pulmonology and respiratory diseases.

The Dr. Schworer Scholarship Fund has been created through the St. Elizabeth Foundation by family members and friends who recognize the growing need for respiratory therapists to expand their education and the importance Schworer placed on education. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving applicant in respiratory therapy.

“We are ever so appreciative of the generosity of Dr. Schworer’s family and friends,” said Jason Wessel, assistant vice president of Patient Care Services, who oversees respiratory therapy. “With the advances in bedside care by therapists, there is a growing need for our associates to advance their education. This scholarship is a major step forward toward that goal.”

The recipient of the first scholarship, Jacklyn Steinman, has been employed at St. Elizabeth in respiratory care for more than eight years. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Science with courses leading to an MBA at Liberty University. Jacklyn pointed to her parents for being supportive of
her career and the guidance and influence of her supervisor Pam Johnson who has worked at St. Elizabeth for 25 years.

“Dad’s family and friends, especially my mom Margaret (a St. Elizabeth retiree and avid volunteer) and my sister Mary Garamy (a recent St. Elizabeth retiree), take strength and comfort knowing that the scholarship will help Jacklyn achieve her education goals and continue to serve our community in the healthcare field,” said son Philip J. Schworer.
