Students in North Central Kentucky last year received more than $57.6 million in college scholarships and grants paid for by Kentucky Lottery proceeds. This is according to newly-released figures from the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA). These funds were used to award more than 34,000 scholarships and grants to North Central Kentucky students.
Statewide, more than 91,300 students all across the Commonwealth received $196.9 million in Kentucky Lottery proceeds during the 2015 fiscal year.
Since the lottery first began funding these programs in 1998, more than 659,000 Kentucky students have received scholarships and grants worth $2.4 billion.
Lottery proceeds are used to fund the merit-based Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship (KEES) program, and two need-based programs – College Access Program (CAP) grants and Kentucky Tuition Grants (KTG).
“Ninety-five cents of every non-loan student aid dollar awarded by the Commonwealth comes straight from the sale of Kentucky Lottery tickets,” said Kentucky Lottery President and CEO Arch Gleason. “The results are tangible – according to KHEAA, data from the KEES program indicates more of Kentucky’s best and brightest students are staying right here at home in Kentucky to attend college.”
“KEES, CAP and KTG are 100 percent funded by the Kentucky Lottery, without which many students would not be able to pursue the career of their dreams,” said Dr. Carl Rollins, KHEAA’s executive director. “We are thankful for the lottery’s proceeds and support its continued efforts to fuel imaginations and fund education.”
